Ruben Fleischer’s Uncharted Is Sony’s New Flagship Franchise
The effort to bring the beloved Uncharted video game series to the big screen started in 2008, sparking doubts about whether it would ever become a reality. After years of anticipation, the movie was finally released in 2022, earning $407 million globally on a budget of $120 million.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film managed to win audiences worldwide. With its financial success and warm reception among viewers, Sony’s CEO, Tom Rothman, proudly proclaimed Uncharted as their promising new flagship cinematic franchise.
Uncharted 2: Will Tom Holland Be Nathan Drake?
The Uncharted series depicted the adventurous journeys of world traveller Nathan Drake (played by Holland) and his experienced mentor Sully (portrayed by Mark Wahlberg) in their quest to uncover the elusive treasure of Magellan.
Although some fans of the original video games believed that Holland wasn’t the perfect fit for the role of Nathan Drake, the movie fared well at the box office.
A week after the first film’s release, director Ruben Fleischer expressed his desire to return to the franchise for an Uncharted sequel. With keen interest from both the director and producer, it seems likely that Uncharted 2 will happen.
Uncharted’s Sequel – Potential Storyline
Spoilers ahead.
The optimistic conclusion of Uncharted hints at a potential sequel through two scenes. Following the intense action climax where the Magellan treasure is lost, it’s revealed that Nathan Drake’s believed-to-be-dead brother, Sam, is actually alive and imprisoned.
Additionally, a mid-credits scene introduces a new antagonist, Gage, linked to the main game villain, Gabriel Roman.
These clues directly suggest a potential storyline for Uncharted 2: Nate’s mission to locate his brother Sam, entwined with a race against Roman in a thrilling treasure hunt. The coveted prize pursued by Nate, Sully, and Roman could likely be the legendary lost city of El Dorado, paralleling the narrative of the original Uncharted game where Roman served as the primary antagonist.
When Will Uncharted 2 Be Released?
Any immediate progress on a sequel appears unlikely due to ongoing Hollywood strikes and Tom Holland’s temporary hiatus from acting. Holland, who took on a pivotal role in the movie and played a part in its production, disclosed that he is taking a year off after a challenging period filming the Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room.
He elaborated on the emotional strain he encountered during the series, leading him to make the decision to take a break from his acting commitments.
Uncharted is currently streaming on Netflix.
