Prime Video: Where Was The Rig Filmed?

byAlex Duthie

Where was the rig filmed_

Where was Prime Video’s 2023 series The Rig filmed, did they actually step foot on a Scottish oil rig, or was it all just cinema magic and practical effects?

If you haven’t watched yet then don’t worry as this will be a spoiler-free article, unless you count the filming locations as a spoiler – which they most certainly aren’t in this case.

The 6 episode series takes us onto an oil rig called the “Kinlock Bravo”, which isn’t in fact a real oil rig here in Scotland, just a fiction designed for the plot.

Iain Glen, Martin Compston, Emily Hampshire, and a list of incredibly talented actors face a mysterious fog that brings nothing but trouble into their working environment.

What Is The Rig’s Genre?

You just have to picture a typical day on a Scottish oil rig, which is scary enough for most people, and then mix that with something straight out of a John Carpenter story – horror on horror basically.

We here at CoveredGeekly absolutely loved the show, and deeply recommend anyone reading to go and watch it if you haven’t marathoned the whole first season yet that is – read our official review here for more details.

So, for those of you who are curiously searching the internet to find out where ‘The Rig’ filmed all of its oil rig scenes, then you’ve landed on the right page.

Despite the fact that the entire show is set on a northern sea oil rig, you’ll be surprised to find out that the oil rig was filmed inside an Edinburgh studio.

The cast never took one step onto a real oil rig, which could have something to do with the fact that they filmed the first season of the show when COVID was still quite the hurdle to get over when filming.

The majority of the show’s filming was done in the studio known as FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh, where an oil rig was built to create the illusion that they were really on one.

Will There Be A Season Two?

There hasn’t been any word on a second season, yet, but the response has been mostly positive so hopefully, Amazon Prime Video see that as a green light to go forward with the series.

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Rig’ Is Now Available To Stream.
