Adventure Time is about to expand once again in the upcoming spinoff series Fionna and Cake which comes to Max on August 31. Madeleine Martin and Roz Ryan return as Fionna and Cake, both of whom starred in the original Adventure Time series as the same characters.
Fionna and Cake initially entered the original series during the third Adventure Time season, which first aired back in 2011, as the gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake – its two main primary characters.
Tom Kenny’s Ice King made the two characters up using his mind, with the two gender-swapped characters then having some adventures of their own inside their world to now years later receive an entire dedicated spinoff series.
The spinoff focuses on multiverse storylines that will see Fionna and Cake travel to worlds familiar to fans of Adventure Time. However, due to the series’ limited episode count, there’s at least one world that sadly never made the cut.
No Flapjack World In ‘Fionna & Cake’ Series
While talking to Christopher Gallardo for The Hollywood Handle, showrunner and producer Adam Muto revealed that the world from The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack won’t be featured in the Fionna & Cake spinoff.
Muto explained that many worlds never made it past the idea stage due to the series only having ten episodes, saying that they “could have” included “a montage with a billion worlds (…) but, it’s more interesting to see them walk around in that world and interact with it.”
Muto went on to add that they knew they “couldn’t go to a billion of [worlds] in 10 episodes”, while also not ruling out any worlds for a potential future instalment. In summary, it’s not that Muto didn’t want to include specific worlds in the upcoming series, he just didn’t have enough episodes to fit all of them in.
‘Fionna & Cake’ Almost Had Flapjack’s World
Interestingly, Muto confirmed that Flapjack’s world almost made the cut and was even originally discussed during the spinoff’s development stage.
During the same interview, the showrunner revealed that they originally “had some ideas like maybe they go to [The Marvelous Misadventures of] Flapjack and they spend an episode being in Flapjack’s world.”
Muto even went on to say that if the series had more episodes, they probably “could get stuff like that”, but ended up opting to “focus around certain characters opposed to the laws of the world because it’s only satisfying if you have a story to tell in those worlds.”
That being said, if the new Adventure Time spinoff managed to green-light a second season, it’s safe to assume that Flapjack’s world may be near the top of Muto’s list of which world to feature next.
