Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett has recently described herself as “middle class,” which has raised eyebrows considering her massive net worth of $95 million.
The comment came during a press conference at Cannes, where her new film Rumours premiered.
During the conference, Blanchett discussed her background and her experience working with refugee filmmakers.

Blanchett said, “I'm white, I'm privileged, I'm middle class and I think one can be accused of having a bit of a white saviour complex.
She continued, “But to be perfectly honest, my interaction with refugees in the field and also in resettled environments has totally changed my perspective on the world, and I'm utterly grateful for that.”
Blanchett's statement has sparked a barrage of mixed responses from X users. Some users have criticized her usage of the “middle class” phrase, considering her net worth of $95 million.
One user took a dig at Blanchett, saying “She is disconnected from reality.”
“Cate Blanchett is ‘middle class'…and I am a giraffe, another user quipped.
Another user questioned Blanchett's stance and wrote “I love Cate Blanchett, but in what world is she ‘middle class' she's been in two major franchises and is worth an estimated 90 million,”.
Other users, however, attempted to defend Blanchett.

They pointed out that in the British context, social classes are traditionally divided into poor, middle class, and royalty.
Therefore, according to this classification, it could be argued that Blanchett falls within the middle-class category.
One X user posted, “She is speaking of her class not her bank balance. She isn't upper class, even if she makes billions.”
A second user wrote, “Class and money are different. She might consider herself middle class because she isn't royalty.”
Cate Blanchett's Rumours is currently playing in theatres.
