Pop sensation Selena Gomez has opened up about her dating life and addressed rumours that have branded her as ‘high maintenance.'
The 31-year-old singer and actress also laid out the qualities she looks for in a potential partner during an interview on SiriusXM.
Gomez, who has been in the public eye since her teen years, clarified that having standards should not be confused with being high maintenance.
She expressed, “I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance.”
The discussion followed the release of her new single Single Soon, where she playfully refers to herself as ‘a little high maintenance' in the lyrics.
Gomez responded, “The line was really fun because I'm not ashamed to say. I actually require X, Y, and Z for you to be with me. So in a way, it was just meant to be for the attitude of the song, and that's genuinely what I feel.”
The interviewers asked what her ‘X, Y, and Z' conditions are. The pop star revealed that her requirements are straightforward and grounded: genuine kindness, a good sense of humor, and respect for her family and those around her.
Gomez said, “You gotta be cool, man. Not cool in the sense that people think you're cool. You just gotta be nice and like, please make me laugh and also just be good to my family and people around you.”
Selena also confirmed that she is currently single and enjoying her own company. She believes that being happy with oneself is crucial for a healthy relationship.
She added, “But you know, I'm just enjoying where I'm at and I just want to be happy with who I am so that whenever that person comes into my life, I can just have them add on to me instead of being this insecure, you know, person that I normally used to be.”
“It's basically my way of saying it's totally okay being on your own and it's fun.”
The conversation about Gomez's dating life has sparked a debate online, with many supporting her stance on having clear standards. While some have criticized her for being ‘superficial'.
One user concurred with the singer and wrote, “Asking for a partner that kind, funny, and genuinely nice to yourself and your loved ones is not high maintenance. Those are perfectly acceptable standards. She doesn't want a boy. She wants her forever human.”
Another user criticized her stance, saying, “She's a rich celebrity. Being a good guy isn't the only requirement, he also has to be rich and perfect. She does have super high standards and she is high maintenance. These are all just facts.”
A second user slammed the pop star stating, “So she's superficial.”
