A potential sequel to 2010's The Social Network is in the works by the original film writer Aaron Sorkin.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Sorkin is penning a Facebook movie that could serve as a sequel to The Social Network which starred Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
During a live episode of The Town podcast in Washington D.C., the Oscar-winning screenwriter was asked about the influence of Facebook and social media on democracy since his 2010 hit.
Sorkin coyly suggested that he is indeed working on the sequel.
Sorkin replied, “Look, yeah, I'll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6.”
When questioned about why he holds a social media company responsible for the pro-Donald Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol.
Sorkin said, “You're going to need to buy a movie ticket.”
When pressed further about whether this means he's developing the idea into a movie, Sorkin simply replied,
“I'm trying. Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement.”
“That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll' … There's supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity.”
“There isn't. There's just growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can't buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money?”
“I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.' Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”
Sorkin has mentioned before that he aims to write a sequel to The Social Network, exploring “the dark side” of Facebook. He particularly expressed interest if David Fincher were to come back as the director.
Sorkin had been previously working on a script centered around the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack, but ultimately, it didn't move forward.
It's uncertain whether any elements from that project will be incorporated into his new script for The Social Network sequel.
The sequel to The Social Network currently lacks both a studio and a director attached to it.
It also remains unclear whether David Fincher and Jesse Eisenberg will make a comeback for the sequel.
The Social Network 2 has not officially been announced yet.
