Cate Blanchett speaks out on viral Squid Game cameo and potential spinoff

Cate Blanchett breaks silence on her surprise Squid Game cameo.

Cate Blanchett has finally spoken out about her surprise cameo in the final season of Netflix’s Squid Game.

The Season 3 finale confirmed the deadly contest was being played far beyond Korea.

In the closing scene, In-ho spotted an American recruiter in Los Angeles, playing ddakji with a homeless man.

That recruiter turned out to be Blanchett, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that carried serious weight.

Speaking to Variety, Blanchett revealed she knew almost nothing about the role beforehand.

“It came out of the blue,” she said, explaining that she was asked to bring her own suit and given only a few storyboard images before filming.

She went on, “Because it’s such a cult series, and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis… I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly.”

“I had to practice and practice… But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.”

Blanchett also said that she’d be more than happy to return to the role if asked.

“I am wildly open to anything… They’re amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched,” she claimed.

Before the season dropped, rumours swirled that Leonardo DiCaprio might appear as one of the masked VIPs, something Netflix later denied.

What has been confirmed, though, is that more Squid Game stories are in the works, including a possible English-language spinoff.

It’s been reported that David Fincher could helm the spinoff, though neither Hwang nor Netflix has officially confirmed it.

Details on the American spinoff have been scarce so far, but this update from Blanchett will surely create buzz among Squid Game fans.

Interestingly, series creator and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk didn’t write the show’s ending to set up a U.S. version.

For him, the finale was meant to show that even if one system falls, another will inevitably take its place.
