1.What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, to remember your preferences, and to provide information to website owners about how their site is being used.
Cookies are not harmful and cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your device. They are unique to your browser and can only be read by the website that created them (or, in the case of third-party cookies, by the third party that set them).
2.How We Use Cookies
CoveredGeekly uses cookies for the following purposes:
- To ensure the website functions correctly and securely
- To remember your preferences and settings (such as login state)
- To understand how visitors use our website and improve the experience
- To serve relevant advertising to our readers through our advertising partners
- To enable social media features and embedded content
3.Types of Cookies We Use
Essential Cookies
These cookies are strictly necessary for the website to function. They cannot be switched off. They are typically set in response to actions you take, such as logging in, setting your privacy preferences, or filling in forms. Without these cookies, the website cannot operate correctly.
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Session cookie | Maintains your login session while you browse | Session |
| Security token | Protects against cross-site request forgery (CSRF) | Session |
| Consent preference | Stores your cookie consent choices | 12 months |
geekly_voter_id | Stores a server-signed anonymous identifier used to remember your votes on Geekly Rankings across page loads. It is not linked to your account, contains no personal information and cannot be read by page scripts. | 12 months |
geekly_vid | Stores a randomly generated anonymous visitor identifier used to count page views and power our “Trending Today” feature. This ID is used solely to deduplicate view counts (so that refreshing a page does not inflate the count). It is not linked to your account, contains no personal information, and is not shared with any third party. | 24 hours |
Analytics Cookies
These cookies allow us to count visits and understand how visitors interact with our website. All information collected is aggregated and anonymised - we cannot identify individual visitors from this data. We use this information to improve how our website works and to understand which content is most popular.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes unique users | 2 years |
| _ga_* | Google Analytics | Maintains session state | 2 years |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes users (short-term) | 24 hours |
You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking at any time using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Advertising Cookies
These cookies are set by our advertising partners to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant advertisements on other websites. They work by uniquely identifying your browser and device. If you do not allow these cookies, you will still see advertising, but it will be less targeted to your interests.
Our primary advertising partner is Mediavine. Mediavine and its partners may set advertising cookies when you visit our website. For a full list of Mediavine's advertising partners and their cookie practices, please visit the Mediavine Privacy Policy.
Functional Cookies
These cookies enable enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third-party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies, some or all of these features may not function correctly.
Social Login Cookies
If you choose to sign in to CoveredGeekly using your Google or Facebook account, those platforms will set their own authentication cookies on your device as part of the OAuth login process. These cookies are set and managed by Google or Meta respectively, and are subject to their own cookie and privacy policies. We do not control these cookies.
Social Media & Embedded Content Cookies
When we embed content from third-party platforms - such as YouTube videos, Twitter/X posts, Instagram posts, or TikTok videos - those platforms may set cookies on your device. These cookies are set by the third party and are subject to their own privacy and cookie policies. We have no control over these cookies.
4.Third-Party Cookies
In addition to our own cookies, we allow third-party services to place cookies on your device when you use our website. These third parties include:
| Provider | Purpose | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google LLC | Analytics, advertising | Google Privacy Policy |
| Mediavine | Programmatic advertising | Mediavine Privacy Policy |
| Automattic (WordPress.com / Jetpack) | Hosting, analytics, security | Automattic Privacy Policy |
| YouTube (Google LLC) | Embedded video content | Google Privacy Policy |
| Twitter / X Corp | Embedded social content | X Privacy Policy |
| Meta (Facebook Login & Instagram) | Social login authentication, embedded social content | Meta Privacy Policy |

| GIPHY, Inc. | GIF search and content delivery for the comment GIF picker | GIPHY Privacy Policy |
5.Your Consent
When you first visit CoveredGeekly, you will be presented with a cookie consent notice managed by our advertising partner Mediavine. This notice allows you to accept or decline non-essential cookies (including analytics and advertising cookies).
Essential cookies are always active as they are required for the website to function. You cannot opt out of essential cookies without disabling them in your browser settings, which may affect your ability to use the website.
Your consent preferences are stored and respected on subsequent visits. You can change your preferences at any time - see Section 6 below.
6.Managing Cookies
You have several options for managing cookies:
Browser Settings
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can typically:
- View what cookies are stored on your device
- Delete individual cookies or all cookies
- Block cookies from specific websites
- Block all third-party cookies
- Block all cookies (note: this will affect website functionality)
For instructions on managing cookies in your browser, visit aboutcookies.org.
Opt-Out Tools
You can opt out of interest-based advertising using the following tools:
- Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) opt-out
- Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) opt-out
- Your Online Choices (UK/EU)
- Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
Disabling advertising cookies does not mean you will see fewer adverts - it means the adverts you see will be less relevant to your interests.
7.Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, changes in applicable law, or changes in our services. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
