Clueless sequel series now in development with original star Alicia Silverstone set to return

Time to dust off the yellow plaid and flip-phones, Cher Horowitz is making a comeback.

Alicia Silverstone is set to return as her iconic Clueless character in a new sequel series for Peacock, according to Variety.

The actress, now 48, also confirmed the news with a nostalgic Instagram post on April 17, sharing a throwback GIF and a screenshot of the announcement.

“Totally buggin’… in the best way,” she wrote.

Story details are still under wraps.

Variety reports that the show picks up after the original film and isn’t connected to Peacock’s previously scrapped reboot from 2020.

That earlier version planned to shift focus to Cher’s best friend Dionne, leaving the main character out completely.

This time, Silverstone isn’t just starring, she’s also executive producing.

She’s joined by original Clueless director and screenwriter Amy Heckerling, producer Robert Lawrence, and Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who are writing the series alongside Dollface creator Jordan Weiss.

The original Clueless hit cinemas in 1995 and quickly became a cultural touchstone.

Loosely adapted from Jane Austen’s Emma, the film featured a cast that included Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.

A spinoff sitcom ran for three seasons from 1996 to 1999, with Rachel Blanchard stepping into Cher’s shoes.

Silverstone has kept her connection to Cher alive over the years.

She returned to the character in Rakuten’s 2023 Super Bowl ad, recreated a scene on TikTok with her son Bear in 2021, and even wore the iconic yellow outfit for a 2018 performance on Lip Sync Battle.

Speaking at The Good Festival’s Sustainability Spotlights event in May 2024, Silverstone said she imagined Cher would be a sustainable fashion queen today.

She said at the event, “She’d [probably shop at] The Real Real because she can get all her fabulous designers there… they’d be secondhand so she won’t have to feel guilty about it.”

In a 2020 interview with Vogue, Silverstone shared her initial thoughts on playing Cher. She admitted that at first, she didn’t particularly like the character.

She said, “Just everything I sort of loathed. But I realized that was just me judging her, and once I started working on her, I found all the heart and all the love.”

She continued, “She loves her daddy so much! And she’s trying to be a supportive friend, so I just sorta put all of my love and heart into this character with these other aspects that were cringeworthy.”
