James Gunn has “talked about” Robert Pattinson’s Batman joining the DCU

After the box office success of Superman, James Gunn has weighed in on whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman could cross paths with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in a future DC film.

The Superman reboot, which landed in cinemas earlier this month, launched the new era of the DC Universe.

The movie has now pulled in more than $500 million at the global box office, with $292 million coming from the US and Canada alone.

Corenswet, like the movie, made his debut as the new Man of Steel earlier this month, stepping into the iconic role after Henry Cavill’s run abruptly ended in 2022.

Now, fans are wondering whether a crossover with Pattinson’s Batman could be on the cards.

James Gunn addresses The Batman/Superman crossover possibility

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at Comic-Con 2025, Gunn said the idea has been floated.

Gunn told the outlet, “I’ve met [Pattinson] before, we’ve talked about it before. But it’s not what’s happening right now.”

“Everything is in flux, so we’ll figure out what we’re doing next.”

Pattinson made his debut as Batman in 2022’s The Batman, alongside Zoë Kravitz. He’s set to return for a sequel, The Batman 2, due out in October 2027.

Alongside Pattinson’s version of the character, another Batman film is also in the works. The Brave and the Bold, which will feature Batman and Robin (Damian Wayne), is part of Gunn’s wider DCU plans. However, that project is still in its early stages.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Gunn admitted that development on The Brave and The Bold is moving slowly and there’s not much to report just yet.

“There’s really no new updates”, he responded.

“We’re working on a script. We have a screenwriter who’s hammering away at it. I’m very involved, and so, you know, we’ll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don’t.”

Batman- Superman crossover is not ‘likely’ in the new DCU

With two different Batman timelines happening, it’s unlikely Pattinson’s version will mix with Gunn’s shared universe.

Pattinson’s Batman is still in the early stages, while The Brave and the Bold will focus on a more experienced Batman and his wider Bat-Family.

Gunn also addressed the crossover possibility in a conversation with Rolling Stone.

“I really should clear this up,” Gunn said, before giving a response that left things just vague enough to keep the speculation alive.

He added, “I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all.”

For now, fans hoping for a Batman/Superman crossover will have to wait.

While it’s clearly something Gunn has thought about, it’s not on the cards just yet.
