Mel Gibson’s long-awaited Passion of the Christ movie sequel finally receives new update

American actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson’s long-awaited Passion of the Christ movie sequel has finally received an update, according to an Italian news outlet known as Italpress.

According to the Italian news agency, Gibson is currently with a production team scouting for potential filming locations with his production team for Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.

Details state that the filmmaker will be in Malta for five days and will be undergoing various meetings with government officials on the Mediterranean Island.

Currently, the sequel is expected to begin production sometime in early 2025, following his promotional tour for his upcoming 2025 action thriller movie Flight Risk.

His Flight Risk movie is set to release on January 24 next year.

Development on Gibson’s Passion of the Christ sequel has gone through various rewrites over the years with his co-writer Randall Wallace, with reports of at least six drafts being developed so far.

Wallace is known for also working alongside Gibson on their incredibly famous 1995 movie Braveheart, which he earned an Oscar nomination for.

Despite the various rewrites, Wallace confirmed earlier this year that the screenplay is finally ready.

It’s currently unclear as to what the sequel will be about, in terms of its plot.

However, past hints have teased a more spiritual approach as compared to its predecessor.

Gibson, in a 2022 interview, teased the following about the sequel: “It’s not a linear narrative…”

“You have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.”

“It’s a big story. It’s a difficult concept, and it has taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story in a way that really delivers.”
