James Cameron has finally shared an update on the next Terminator movie, and it’s not the news fans were hoping for.
The Avatar director recently revealed that work on his planned Terminator reboot has barely begun.
Cameron, who was said to be developing a reboot script in May 2023, admitted that he’s struggling to make progress due to writer’s block.

Cameron recently appeared on CNN’s The Amanpour Hour, hosted by Christiane Amanpour.
They discussed the 80th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing, and Cameron joined to talk about his upcoming project, Ghosts of Hiroshima, which shares the stories of survivors from the bombings in Japan.
When asked about the progress on the Terminator reboot, he admitted he hasn’t begun work on the film, and no script exists yet.
He said, “I’m at a point right now where I have a hard time writing science fiction. I’m tasked with writing a new Terminator story.”
He added, “I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events.”
“We are living in a science fiction age right now, and the only way out is through, by using our intelligence, by using our curiosity, by using our command of technology.”
The franchise has been on hold since Terminator: Dark Fate bombed at the box office in 2019.

Following its release, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton both hinted that they wouldn’t return to their iconic roles for the next chapter in the sci-fi franchise.
Cameron first floated the idea of a reboot in December 2022, teasing a shift in focus toward artificial intelligence rather than “bad robots gone crazy.”
While the future of Terminator is still up in the air, Cameron has plenty lined up once Avatar 3 is done.
Last year, he bought the rights to Ghosts of Hiroshima, a book by Charles Pellegrino set to be published this August.
Cameron’s plan is to merge that story with Pellegrino’s 2015 book, Last Train From Hiroshima, to create a film about a man who survived both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.
This was expected to be his next big project after the release of Avatar 5.
He has also announced a new fantasy film based on Joe Abercrombie’s novel The Devils.
Cameron and his company, Lightstorm, have acquired the rights, and he’ll be co-writing the adaptation with Abercrombie himself.
