Saoirse Ronan reveals she was rejected for the legendary Harry Potter role due to young age

Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan recently revealed that she auditioned for one of the most beloved roles in the “Harry Potter” franchise.

The 30-year-old actress, known for her performances in films like Lady Bird and Little Women, shared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that she was the top contender for the role of Luna Lovegood, but was ultimately rejected.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Ronan admitted the rejection has stayed with her over the years.

She shared with Fallon, “There are things that you’ll pass on and then they come out, and you think, ‘Oh God, that was a misstep on my part,’ but I think the one that stayed with me over the years - I didn’t say no to it, I just didn’t get the part.”

“I lost, again. It’s a running theme for me.”

Though Ronan didn’t land the part, she fondly recalled her audition experience.

She said, “I had gone up for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter years ago, because it was like the Irish character, so they got everyone Irish in - like half of Ireland to come and audition.”

She continued, “I knew I wasn’t going to get it because I was too young, but I got to read out a scene that was going to be in Harry Potter, and it was the coolest thing ever.”

Evanna Lynch, who went on to portray the quirky and enigmatic Luna, was cast instead and made her debut in 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Lynch reprised her role in the franchise’s later films, including Half-Blood Prince (2009), Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), and Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).

While Ronan may have missed out on playing the whimsical witch, her star power continues to rise in Hollywood.

Shortly after the rejection, Ronan landed a breakthrough role in Atonement (2007), where she portrayed the character Briony Tallis.

The role earned her widespread recognition, including her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress at just 13 years old.

Following Atonement, Ronan built a remarkable career with standout roles in films such as The Lovely Bones, Hanna, Brooklyn, and Lady Bird, which earned her multiple Oscar nominations.
