Sony apparently giving up on its failed Spider-Man Universe spinoff movies with Kraven

Kraven the Hunter may be the last chapter in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Sony Pictures’ latest film, Kraven the Hunter, is shaping up to be another flop for the studio, following the underwhelming reception of Venom: The Last Dance and Madame Web.

The movie, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven, has faced heavy criticism, earning a dismal 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many see it as another misstep in Sony’s attempt to build a Spider-Man universe without the web-slinger himself.

According to The Wrap, Kraven the Hunter could be the final chapter in Sony’s struggling Spider-Man Universe (SSU).

The report claims Sony has wrapped up all its originally planned SSU projects and is now shifting its focus to the successful Spider-Verse animated films and Spider-Man movies connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Kraven the Hunter is the SSU’s sixth instalment, following Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web, and the upcoming Venom 3.

The film introduces Kraven, one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains, in live-action for the first time.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, a rising big-game hunter who faces off against a new enemy, the Rhino — a mad scientist who has mutated himself into a monstrous, rhino-like creature.

Unlike Marvel Studios’ interconnected cinematic universe, Sony’s SSU has been criticized for its focus on villain origin stories with little direct connection to Spider-Man.

Looking ahead, Sony plans to shift its strategy toward more Spider-Man-centric projects, including Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, a Spider-Man Noir series, and a fourth live-action Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland.

It’s unclear if characters like Kraven, Rhino, or other SSU figures will play a role in these future stories.
