Director Zach Cregger, known for horror films such as Barbarian and Weapons, has shared a small update on how he is approaching Resident Evil.
While talking with The New York Times, Cregger shared that he has the same thinking process as a fan when it comes to beloved video games being adapted for the big screen.
He admitted that when he sees announcements of a live-action video game adaptation, his first reaction is typically: “Don’t ruin this for me.”

When talking about his Resident Evil movie, Cregger explained that he hopes to honour the intense world that has been shaped in the many game instalments of the franchise.
“I love the idea of being pitted against a world that is hellbent on annihilating you,” Cregger said.
“It just feels fun and I haven’t seen a movie that offers that sort of experience.”
Despite his thoughts on video game adaptations, concerns began to grow amid the Resident Evil fandom once it was revealed the new movie would be crafting “a different story” set in the same world.
This new movie will not be bringing iconic characters such as Leon Kennedy into the fold, but will also not be “breaking the rules of the games,” as Cregger previously explained to Inverse.
However, he added that it will be “obedient to the lore of the games (…) I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”
What This Could Mean For Future Resident Evil Movies

Leon and the gang may not be getting the big screen treatment in Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot, but that doesn’t mean they will be ruled out entirely.
All Cregger means is that he doesn’t want to go over what the games have already covered, suggesting that this reboot will be directly for the fandom of the games.
If the movie performs well and warrants a sequel… maybe then we’ll get to see some legacy video game characters share the spotlight.
