Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard reveals Twin Peaks-inspired spinoff idea

With Stranger Things heading towards its final chapter on New Year’s Eve, Finn Wolfhard has shared what he’d love to see if the hit Netflix show ever spawned a spinoff.

The actor, best known as Mike Wheeler, recently revealed he’s got a pretty clear vision for a Stranger Things spinoff, and it sounds like it could be both strange and exciting.

In a recent talk with Variety, Wolfhard looked back fondly on finishing his time on set.

But the focus soon turned to the secretive Stranger Things spinoff that’s been quietly taking shape. He shared his prediction for it and compared the new series to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.

“Like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe,” Wolfhard, 22, suggested.

“I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters.”

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife star was quick to stress that this was purely his own musing rather than a hint of what’s to come.

He clarified, “[Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer] were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official.”

“I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?”

Wolfhard previously revealed in 2023 that he once came dangerously close to guessing the Duffers’ real spinoff plans.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he recalled pitching an idea to them, only to see their shocked reaction.

“I was like, ‘But if you guys are actually going to do a spin-off, it should be this.’ And then I said it and the Duffers looked at each other and looked at me and they were like, ‘Could we talk to you for a second?’”.

“They pulled me aside and said, ‘That is the idea. Who told you?’ and I was like, ‘No one… I just thought that would be a cool way to expand.’”

According to him, the brothers ended the exchange with a simple instruction, “Okay, well… don’t tell anyone.”

Interestingly, there’s already a spinoff on the way, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which is an animated series inspired by classic Saturday morning cartoons.

However, that one focuses on the original cast and doesn’t really follow the anthology style Wolfhard has in mind.
