HBO has officially renewed The Last Of Us for a second season, with the announcement being shared online only days before episode 3 of the first season is released. The live-action HBO Max series The Last Of Us is based on the original PlayStation game from the studio Naughty Dog, originally released in 2013. The game series has featured two installments so far, with the first game also having a remastered version available to play on PlayStation. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have taken on the parts of Joel and Ellie, who are the two main protagonists of the game series.
The live-action adaptation of The Last Of Us game over on HBO Max has already taken the world by storm, being one of the most talked about tv shows of 2023 so far. It has received plenty of high praise from both fans of the game series and new audience members for perfectly taking the playable game’s storyline into a live-action realm, which hasn’t always worked out well for similar projects in the past. Craig Mazin, who brought us the captivating 2019 series Chernobyl, and Neil Druckmann, who both wrote and directed the original game series, are both at the helm of the HBO Max adaptation of The Last Of Us. This combination has been said by countless fans online for being the reason for the success behind the show, with no signs of being wrong as HBO announce the second season is already in development.

Everything We Know So Far About Season 2
Seeing that we are only two episodes into the nine-episode 2023 series of The Last Of Us, it is sadly just too early to confidently tell what section of the original games season 2 will focus on. We have already been treated to several large moments from the first game’s narrative, but there is still a lot of ground to cover in terms of the first game’s storyline, but it is possible that season 2 will continue the first game’s storyline. However, if season one somehow managed to wrap up the whole first game into nine episodes, then season 2 would of course be based on the second part of the game series The Last Of Us: Part 2.
Neil Druckmann once said that a third part of the game series may never see the light of day, and even if it did, it probably wouldn’t be for a while considering how long it took for the second installment to come out. The Last Of Us: Part 2 was released a whole seven years after the original release of The Last Of Us, so hopefully the live-action series will be able to stretch out the two games into more than two seasons. We will in the meantime have to just patiently wait and see what happens in the first season, you can currently watch new episodes every Monday on HBO Max with episode 3 being next in line as of writing this article.
It should be safe to assume that Pedro Pascal will be back as Joel and that Bella Ramsey will return as Ellie, along with various other characters who feature throughout the main storyline of the first and second game installments. However, there could possibly be some characters from the game series that we have yet to see in the first season, and may not see at all throughout the nine episodes. So there could very well be some official casting announcements in the upcoming months, or at least during some point this year. If the second season dives into the storyline of the second game for example, then one character to expect would be Abby Anderson plus her various associates. Sadly, no official release date has been announced as of yet, these details may come after the first season has finished airing over on HBO Max.
