Prequel project to Zach Cregger’s Weapons already being planned

New Line studio is eyeing more from the world of Weapons, just weeks after the film’s box office success.

According to Deadline, the studio has entered early talks for a prequel to Zach Cregger’s horror-mystery, which opened to strong numbers last weekend.

Details about the potential story remain tightly under wraps, and it’s not yet certain whether Cregger will return to the director’s chair.

Sources say the filmmaker was approached by a writer friend with a concept that immediately caught his attention, an idea so fresh that even New Line president Richard Brener and Warner Bros chairperson Mike De Luca haven’t heard it yet.

For now, Cregger has a lot on his plate. He’s currently in pre-production on Resident Evil for Sony and plans to move straight into an original project called Flood afterwards.

Both films will take priority before he can consider returning to the Weapons universe.

The original film is Cregger’s follow-up to 2022’s Barbarian, which established him as one of horror’s most intriguing new voices.

Weapons follows the mysterious disappearance of 17 third-graders from the small town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania, all vanishing at exactly 2:17 a.m.

Julia Garner stars as Justine Gandy, the teacher whose class disappears, alongside Josh Brolin as the father of one of the missing children and Alden Ehrenreich as a local police officer.

The cast also features Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Cary Christopher.

Released by Warner Bros on August 8, Weapons turned out to be both a commercial and critical success.

It debuted at number one in North America with around $42.5 million and has now earned over $81 million worldwide.
