Ariana Grande admits she ‘felt confused too’ over Cynthia Erivo’s emotional reaction to viral ‘holding space’ Wicked interview

Ariana Grande has revealed exactly how she felt as her Wicked co-star was asked about fans “holding space” during the finale of the movie’s “Defying Gravity” scene.

The interview moment in question went on to make waves on social media, which prompted both memes and fans lightheartedly “holding space” in videos while watching Wicked.

However, Grande wasn’t overly sure what was going on to begin with.

When asked to describe the moment while making an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Grande explained how the interview prompted the viral moment.

“She said to Cynthia, she said, ‘I saw online-‘ and forgive me if I don’t quote it perfectly but she said, ‘I saw online a lot of people are taking the lyrics of Defying Gravity and really holding space with that.'”

The “we can’t be friends” singer continued while holding back laughter, “So, you know, for me – I’m sitting next to Cynthia, and I’m like, ‘holding space with that… what is…'”

Then, while doing an impression of Erivo, Grande added, “Cynthia goes, ‘Umm, I didn’t know that was happening’ and I’m like, ‘Wait, what’s happening?'”

“So, I kind of missed what- I’m like, ‘What’s happening?’ at that point.”

Grande went on to explain how the interview, Tracy E. Gilchrist, wasn’t overly sure how Erivo had perceived “holding space” to mean, seemingly making everyone a bit confused.

“It seems like Tracy was like, ‘Oh no, I- I mean, I saw it… a few times. I’ve seen it. I mean, I am in queer media.'”

The Wicked star added how she felt completely lost by this point in the viral interview, adding, “I’m like, ‘What the f**k is any of this interaction? What does it mean?'”

“I didn’t know what it meant.”

“I was just trying to comfort Cynthia because she is very emotional,” Grande admitted.

While explaining how the two Wicked stars often use “physical touch” when comforting each other, Grande revealed she thought it best to “grab her finger” during the “holding space” moment.

“I could see that she was getting, like, choked up by what Tracy has shared, and I’m like, ‘Oh shi*’, and I grab her finger and I [tap it] because I didn’t know what else to do with myself.”

“It was just energy that I didn’t know what to do with.”

She continued: “It came out in that way because it was like well-intentioned and I wanted to be loving and be there for her, but why this, I don’t fu**ing know.”

When asked if anyone has explained what “holding space” means to Grande yet, she said, “No, I still don’t know what it meant!”

“I think, you know, it was just a beautiful way of saying that people identify with the lyrics and it brings them strength and, you know, of course, that’s what it meant.”

“But it was just a really strange thing,” she added.

“I was grateful to see the reaction of the world when this clip came out because I was like, ‘Oh, great! I’m not broken! They felt weird too!'”

“‘They felt so confused too!'”
