Spider-Man: Brand New Day First Reactions Praise Tom Holland’s Best Performance Yet

The movie is being praised for its emotional weight, action and visual identity.

The first social reactions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day have arrived following the film’s Los Angeles premiere, and the early critical response is very encouraging.

While several professional critics are calling the film Tom Holland’s strongest Spider-Man outing, others have raised concerns about inconsistent visual effects, uneven pacing and a screenplay carrying more MCU baggage than it can handle.

Still, one point appears unusually consistent: Holland has delivered one of his best performances as Peter Parker.

Mike Ryan described Brand New Day as a “much more cerebral” follow-up to No Way Home. He called it Holland’s best performance as Peter Parker and went as far as naming it the finest Spider-Man film since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.

Eric Francisco praised its “strong emotional center, blistering action” and sincerity. His reaction was especially notable for beginning with a warning about the exaggerated language that usually dominates social-media embargoes before concluding that the film genuinely deserved the excitement.

Drew Taylor of TheWrap similarly praised the film as joyful and emotional, saying it examines what Spider-Man represents while giving the character fresh energy under director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Brandon Lewis of Geek Vibes Nation called it an ambitious and mature interpretation of Peter Parker, praising Cretton’s handling of Spider-Man’s abilities and placing some of its emotional moments among the MCU’s best.

Meanwhile, Sean Tajipour of Nerdtropolis compared the experience to watching a multi-part episode of the 1990s Spider-Man animated series brought to life. He praised the film’s large-scale comic-book storytelling and described Holland’s work as his strongest and most complete Spider-Man performance so far.

Fandango’s Erik Davis said Cretton brings “ferocious energy” to the film while making the adventure feel deeper, more thoughtful and more mature than Holland’s original trilogy.

/Film writer Jeremy Mathai was even more enthusiastic. He compared the movie’s energy to the PlayStation Spider-Man games and described it as the best MCU Spider-Man film “by a mile,” as well as Holland’s strongest performance as Peter.

Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier admitted that the film left him crying. He said it balances around five major narrative threads, acknowledging that the experience can become overwhelming while arguing that the separate elements eventually come together beautifully.

Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture called it the strongest entry in Holland’s Spider-Man series. He praised Cretton’s more grounded, back-to-basics approach and Holland’s continuing development as Peter, but found the pacing and visual effects inconsistent. He also suggested that the movie does not fully come alive until Sadie Sink’s character becomes central to the story.

James Preston Poole, writing for DiscussingFilm, praised the visuals and the characterisation of Spider-Man but argued that those strengths are diminished by an “overstuffed script” that places MCU connections and cameos ahead of its central hero.

Bleeding Cool’s Kaitlyn Booth expressed a similar concern. She said the movie sometimes feels like a stepping stone to future Marvel stories rather than a fully cohesive standalone film. Booth found its structure messy, although she enjoyed the pairing of Peter Parker and Frank Castle.

AwardsWatch’s Erik Anderson criticised some “dodgy CGI” and uninspired action in the first half, but praised the performances from Holland and Zendaya and singled out Jon Bernthal’s Punisher as a highlight.

The least enthusiastic reaction came from IGN contributor Carlos Alonso Morales, who called the film merely “fine.” Morales thought it looked better than Holland’s previous Spider-Man films and contained some effective swinging and action sequences, but found its stakes surprisingly low and strongly disliked the way it adapted one (spoiler-y) comic-book element.

Social reactions released immediately after a premiere naturally favour excitement, broad emotional statements and comparisons designed to attract attention. What is more meaningful is all the consistent remarks underneath that enthusiasm.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in theatres July 29.
