It’s been nearly eight years since Sherlock last graced our screens, and while fans have been holding out hope for another trip to 221B Baker Street, Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t making any promises.
In a recent interview with Variety, the actor shared his thoughts on what it would take for him to step back into the shoes of the brilliant but socially aloof detective—and let’s just say, it’s not happening anytime soon.
When asked about a potential return, Cumberbatch didn’t shy away from addressing the big question. “A lot of money,” he quipped with a laugh before getting serious.

“It would take it to be better than it ever was.”
“You leave them or yourselves wanting more.”
“There’s always that itch to scratch, but I think it would have to be the superlative version of what we’ve already achieved.”
If Sherlock ever does come back, it’s going to need to blow our minds
The show—which ran for four seasons and a one-off special between 2010 and 2017—redefined how modern audiences saw Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character.
The chemistry between Cumberbatch’s Holmes and Martin Freeman’s John Watson was electric, the writing was sharp, and the mysteries kept us all guessing.
However, with such a stellar legacy, it makes sense that Cumberbatch would want any follow-up to be even better than what came before.

Still, the wait has been long, and many fans have resigned themselves to the idea that Sherlock may have permanently closed its case files
Steven Moffat has said, “I’d love to do it again. Look, it’s not a format that wears out. It’s over a hundred years old and going strong, so why aren’t we making more?”
Speaking of logistics, that’s another major hurdle.
Cumberbatch and Freeman are now in high demand, with their schedules packed to the brim.
Until then, the game is… well, maybe not on, but it’s certainly not over.
