Harry Potter star Gary Oldman says he ‘could’ play Dumbledore in upcoming HBO reboot

Harry Potter star Gary Oldman is open to potentially playing Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO TV reboot of the franchise.

In a recent interview with IndieWire at the 76th Primetime Emmys, Oldman was asked if he’d be interested in reprising his role as Sirius Black in the HBO reboot.

Oldman responded, “I love Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.”

Then he playfully suggested that in a few years’ time, he might be suitable to play the role of Dumbledore.

He said, “I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people.”

“Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”

The new Harry Potter television series is set to premiere on HBO in 2026. The series is set to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original book series, with each season potentially covering one book.

The show is currently in the early stages of development, with casting yet to be announced.

At 66 years old, Oldman is actually close in age to the actors who previously played Dumbledore in the film series.

Richard Harris was 71 when he first played the role, while Michael Gambon was 64 when he took over the character after Harris’s death.

With filming set to begin in spring 2025, any talks about Oldman possibly returning would need to happen fairly soon.

Although there’s been some speculation about original cast members making a comeback, it appears the production is leaning towards a completely new cast.

Recently, open casting calls were held for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, which suggests that the show is looking for fresh talent to play these beloved characters.
