James Gunn confirms Krypto will join David Corenswet’s DCU Superman with cute dog reveal

James Gunn’s Superman is gearing up for its flight next year.

The director has confirmed that Krypto the Superdog will make his big-screen debut in the upcoming Superman reboot.

While Krypto wasn’t originally part of the script, Gunn said the decision to include Superman’s trusty companion came after a personal experience while working on the film.

The director shared that he adopted a dog named Ozu shortly after he started writing the script, which sparked the idea of adding Krypto to the story.

Gunn posted on Threads, “Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer.”

“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman.”

“Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic, to say the least.”

He also added, “He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”

The addition of Krypto promises to bring some lighthearted moments and warmth to the movie.

While Gunn hasn’t given away too much about Krypto’s role, it’s clear he’ll be more than just a cute sidekick.

Superman will serve as the kickoff for Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe and will star David Corenswet in the titular role.

Filming for Superman has wrapped, and the film is now in the post-production phase.

Although plot details are tightly under wraps, the official description of Gunn’s Superman reveals that the film will focus on Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas.

The story will explore Superman’s struggle to embody the ideals of “truth, justice, and the American way” in a world where such values are often considered outdated.
