Mission Impossible 8 director reveals viewer ‘almost had heart attack’ during action scene at early screening

"I guess we did something right."

A truly pulse-pounding moment in film might soon be more literal than ever.

If you’re planning to watch the upcoming Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, you might want to schedule a health checkup first.

Director Christopher McQuarrie has hinted at an intense action sequence in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning that reportedly left an early viewer gasping for air.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, McQuarrie shared a surprising reaction from a test screening of the action flick.

He said, “We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.

“And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.”

The eighth Mission: Impossible film, hitting theatres on May 23, 2025, sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt.

With a staggering $400 million budget, it serves as a direct follow-up to 2023’s Dead Reckoning.

The trailer for the film teases some intense action sequences, including Tom Cruise scuba diving around a wrecked submarine, flying and falling from a biplane, and, of course, lots of running.

In Dead Reckoning, the first part of the franchise’s two-part finale, Ethan Hunt (played by Cruise) battles a powerful AI known as The Entity, which can predict his every move and poses a massive threat if it ends up in the wrong hands.

After surviving a catastrophic train crash at the film’s end, Ethan discovers The Entity is hidden aboard an old Russian submarine.

However, an old adversary, Gabriel (Esai Morales), is also in pursuit.

Morales returns in The Final Reckoning, along with familiar faces like Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma.

New cast members include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman, and Tramell Tillman.

The trailer also confirms Angela Bassett’s return as CIA Director Erika Sloane, a role she first played in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
