Netflix cancels The Sandman series as creator Neil Gaiman faces sexual misconduct allegations

"We only had enough story for one more season."

Netflix will be closing its doors to the live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, announcing today that its upcoming second season will be its last.

As shared by Variety today, January 31, the streaming platform states that The Sandman Season 2 was intended to be the final instalment before filming began.

This news comes as Gaiman faces accusations of sexual misconduct by various women.

Despite the accusations surrounding Gaiman, Variety confirms Netflix had already been planning to end The Sandman before any accusations came to light.

According to showrunner Allan Heinberg, the plan was to always focus on Dream’s story, the show’s main character played by British actor Tom Sturridge.

The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story,” Heinberg told Variety.

“Back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” he added.

He continued, “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

The show’s first season dropped on Netflix back in 2022, with its upcoming and long-awaited season still set for a 2025 release.

The Sandman coming to an end with a second season was fairly unexpected when regarding fan expectations of how far a live-action adaptation could be stretched out.

“Why????? This is so good!!” one fan wrote to Variety.

“Always cancel the good shows,” another frustrated fan added.

“All Netflix does is cancel shows,” a third chimed in.

Although it’s said that the streaming giant had plans to end with a second season before Gaiman was accused of sexual misconduct, some fans weren’t convinced.

“I feel sorry for the actors and everyone involved work has been take away from them cuz of what Gaiman has done,” one said.

“Yeah umm this a huge L. They couldve continued the show without Neil like how rick and morty continued without Justin Roiland,” another added.

“This show could have continued without his involvement.”

“The first season was incredibly satisfying.”
