The Rings of Power series officially renewed for much ‘darker’ Season 3 with major time jump

The War of the Elves is incoming.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series has been officially renewed for a third season by Prime Video.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the filming for Season 3 is set to begin this spring at Shepperton Studios in the UK.

Since its 2022 premiere, The Rings of Power has drawn over 170 million viewers worldwide, making it one of Prime Video’s most-watched shows.

Set during Middle-earth’s Second Age—thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings—the series has followed key figures like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Sauron (Charlie Vickers).

Season 2 ended on a dramatic note and left fans eager for what’s next.

The show dropped much of its mystery, confirming Gandalf’s true identity and laying out Sauron’s strategy for conquering Middle-earth with his newly forged Elven rings.

The third season is set to explore Sauron’s rise in greater detail, focusing on the forging of the One Ring and his growing ambition to conquer Middle-earth.

According to the official logline, “Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”

The War of the Elves, a key conflict in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, was the first major battle against Sauron (Charlie Vickers) in Middle-earth.

This battle took place long before the War of the Last Alliance, which was depicted in The Lord of the Rings movie prologue.

Along with the renewal news, the production team confirmed the director lineup for Season 3.

Charlotte Brändström, an International Emmy nominee who previously directed two episodes in Season 1 and co-directed five in Season 2, is returning.

Sanaa Hamri, who directed three episodes in Season 2, is also back.

Joining them is newcomer Stefan Schwartz, best known for The Boys, The Walking Dead.
