In a recent interview, Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra defended the very publicly criticised movie Madame Web, among other Spider-Man Universe titles.
The movie, which was released on February 14th and starred Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, was not received well by viewers.
It was shamed as an “embarrassing mess” and “a clunky, poorly-written, messy, and sloppy movie packed with some mediocre editing and performances.”
However, Vinciquerra completely disagrees and has blamed the press and critics for destroying the movie.
“Let’s just touch on Madame Web for a moment.”
“Madame Web underperformed in the theatres because the press just crucified it.”
“It was not a bad film, and it did great on Netflix,” he added.
“For some reason, the press decided that they didn’t want us making these films out of Kraven [the Hunter] and Madame Web and the critics just destroyed them.”
The CEO who is stepping down at the end of the year, also added how other Sony movies had similar experiences.
“They also did it with Venom, but the audience loved Venom and made Venom a massive hit.”
“These are not terrible films. They were just destroyed by the critics in the press, for some reason.”
Vinciquerra was also asked if the Spider-Man universe needs a new strategy to which he replied…
“I do think we need to rethink it, just because it’s snake-bitten.”
“If we put another one out, it’s going to get destroyed, no matter how good or bad it is,” he told the Los Angeles Times.
He was not the only one to blame someone else for box office flop as actress Emma Roberts who played Mary spoke to Variety adding that memes were to blame.
“If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different,” Roberts told Variety.
“And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.”
