Sydney Sweeney unrecognizable as ‘female Rocky’ in iconic boxer Christy Martin biopic

Sydney Sweeney is set to step into the ring as legendary boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd.

The film, currently shooting in Charlotte, will depict the tumultuous and inspiring life of Martin, widely recognized as one of America’s pioneering female boxers.

The latest set photos, first shared by paparazzi with Sweeney sharing official images later, reveal a dramatic transformation for Sweeney, who looks almost unrecognizable in her portrayal of the boxer.

In a post shared by Sweeney, mostly in response to the paparazzi revealing her look before an official image was released, she said: “Well the cats out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes so here’s a little [behind the scenes] from my film I’m working on right now.”

She added: “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman - a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.”

She continued: “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon :)”

To embody Martin’s look from the 1990s, Sweeney sports a curly brunette wig, a blue bandana, and baggy clothing, along with facial makeup designed to resemble the boxing star.

The film will chronicle the life of Christy Martin, who became a trailblazer for female boxing in the 1990s.

Often referred to as the “female Rocky” by the film’s producers, Martin broke barriers in a male-dominated sport, becoming the first woman to sign a contract with iconic boxing promoter Don King.

She also became the only female boxer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Directed by Michôd from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mirrah Foulkes, the biopic will also shed light on Martin’s personal struggles, including toxic relationships and a harrowing near-death experience.

The turning point in her life came in 1989 when she met her manager and future husband, Jim Martin, a relationship that would later take a dark and tumultuous turn.

The film’s cast features Ben Foster as Jim Martin, Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Katy O’Brian as Lisa Holewyne, Ethan Embry as John Salters, Jess Gabor as Sherry Lusk, Chad L. Coleman as Don King, and Tony Cavalero as James Maloney.

Coming to theaters sometime in 2025.
