Viggo Mortensen in talks to return as Aragorn for Lord of the Rings movie Hunt for Gollum

Viggo Mortensen is officially in talks to return as Aragorn for Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis’ upcoming The Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum.

In fact, Jackson and Serkis have both personally asked him to return to the role.

The movie is set around the same time as The Fellowship of the Ring, in which Mortensen starred as Aragorn over twenty years ago.

Despite the obvious years of life lived since then, the minds behind the Middle-earth project have shared details on how they would make Mortensen a younger Aragorn.

Philipa Boyens, one of the famous co-writers behind the live-action Middle-earth movies, revealed the news this week while talking to The Playlist.

When asked if Mortensen would be returning, Boyens delivered.

“Honestly, that’s entirely up to Viggo,” she revealed.

“We are at a very early stage,” she added.

“I’ve spoken to Viggo, Andy [Serkis] has spoken to him, Peter [Jackson] has spoken to him, we’ve all spoken to each other, and honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else playing Aragorn.”

Although she expressed how everyone involved is hoping for the legendary Aragorn actor to reprise his role for another outing, she added: “It will be completely and entirely up to Viggo.”

She continued to address Mortensen’s age, and how they would make it work.

“I know Andy wants to work with him, but also, we don’t see this as like, using A.I. [technology], this is about a digital make-up,” she said.

She also stated that above all else, the most important thing right now is “how good the script is,” as that will be the deal maker or breaker for Mortensen to return.

“I suspect if he decides he doesn’t want to do it we would still want him to be heavily involved, like how do we hand this character off,” she continued.

“But literally that decision is several, several months away. He’s got to read the script first and that’s exactly what I’m going to be working on when I get out of this interview [laughs].”
