Middle-earth is back in motion!
Nearly a year after The Rings of Power wrapped up its dramatic second season, production has finally begun on its highly anticipated third season.
And it looks like darkness is ready to descend once again.
Amazon confirmed the news with a cryptic behind-the-scenes clip showing a crew member crossing a lot while holding what appears to be Morgoth’s Iron Crown.
The post, simply captioned “Something is stirring on set,” left little doubt. Sauron is coming back, and this time, he’s not holding back.
While the teaser stopped short of revealing much, Amazon did divulge the first official synopsis for Season 3.
The story will leap forward several years after the previous season’s events, plunging straight into the War of the Elves and Sauron.
The official log line of season 3 reads: “Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”
Casting remains largely under wraps. Amazon hasn’t confirmed if Charlie Vickers (Sauron), Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), or Robert Aramayo (Elrond) will return, though it would be surprising if they sat this one out—especially with the One Ring now in play.
New additions to the ensemble include Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower in a mystery role, heavily rumoured to be Galadriel’s elusive husband, Celeborn.
Eddie Marsan also joins the cast, with speculation suggesting he could portray a relative of Prince Durin IV, played by Owain Arthur.
Directors Charlotte Brändström and Sanaa Hamri are back behind the camera, now joined by Stefan Schwartz.
Filming is currently taking place at Shepperton Studios in the UK.
