Demi Moore has never shied away from tough or vulnerable roles, and her latest performance in The Substance is no exception.
But even for a seasoned actress like Moore, some moments on-screen can be hard to watch.
In an interview with Elle, Moore admitted that a close-up shot of her bare behind in the film made her cringe. “It’s like, ugh,” she said. “It bugs the s— out of me.”

While she could have asked for the scene to be edited differently, Moore decided against it.
“I didn’t ask for any adjustments because I knew it was in service of something that was more important than me,” she explained.
That “something” was the film’s deeper message about ageing, beauty standards, and self-acceptance - topics that resonate with Moore on a personal level.
In The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a TV fitness personality whose career crumbles after she’s fired on her 50th birthday.

Desperate, Elisabeth takes a mysterious neon substance that turns her into a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley, with predictably monstrous consequences.
The role is intense - there’s full-body nudity, harsh lighting, and a raw emotional journey - but that’s exactly why Moore signed on. “It was incredibly liberating to step into this really vulnerable, exposed place emotionally and physically,” she said.
When discussing the pressures women face as they age – particularly in Hollywood – Moore said she’s noticed a shift but acknowledges there’s still work to be done.
“I do think that’s changed, and now I happen to be 62 at a point where we need to reevaluate the desirability of a woman who has gone through menopause,” she said.
