Hayden Panettiere has addressed the public concerns surrounding her recent interview with People magazine due to her apparent slurred speech and demeanour.
The 35-year-old actress appeared in a video interview with People magazine, discussing various topics including the death of her brother Jansen in 2023.
However, viewers noticed that Panettiere seemed to have difficulty articulating her words, with slurred speech and glazed eyes.
This led to widespread speculation about her well-being and sobriety on social media.
Panettiere took to Instagram to address the situation, calling it “unfathomable” that she had to explain herself.
The actress revealed that she had been sleep-deprived prior to the interview due to one of her dogs recovering from emergency surgery.
She wrote, “It’s unfathomable that I’m even in this position, but I feel forced to address it in a space where I won’t be criticised for how fast or slow I speak.”
She also added, “I hadn’t slept for two days prior to the shoot due to one of my dogs who was recovering from an emergency surgical procedure. It was an eight-hour shoot followed by an on-camera interview that was supposed to last for one hour.”
Panettiere mentioned that the interview started off well, but that portion was not included in the clip shared by People.
As the conversation grew heavier, and it became clear she was “fading,” her representative requested to stop the interview.
They suggested rescheduling for another time but were told it wasn’t necessary as it was considered “an emotional and heartfelt interview.
She added, “The magazine does not grant approval for images or video interviews before they run. We see the interview when it goes live.”
Panettiere then directly responded to fans’ concerns about the interview clip and seemed to reference the death of her brother Jansen, who tragically passed away from a heart attack in 2023.
She explained, “Grief looks different on everyone. Whether or not I am on medication is none of anyone’s business and is between me and my doctor.”
“I am doing interviews to promote my new film because I am proud of it. The real issue here is the toxicity of social media and a news cycle that is driven by clickbait”
She expressed gratitude to those who came to her defense and acknowledged that she is “a work in progress.”
She added, “Mental health is so important, and I hope those reading this now understand that what you say hiding behind a computer screen can have a detrimental impact on someone.”
“For those of you who have come to my defence amidst this chaos, I am so grateful.”
“Like I’ve said before, I am a work in progress. We all are.”
