Henry Cavill breaks silence on long-awaited Highlander movie reboot

Henry Cavill has confirmed that his long-awaited Highlander reboot is finally moving forward.

The Man of Steel star recently revealed that his summer schedule is fully dedicated to the upcoming fantasy-action film, which will be directed by John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski.

The Highlander reboot has hit plenty of delays during development. It was once set to begin filming in January 2025, which is already nine years after Stahelski first signed on as director.

Things got pushed back even more because of reshoots for Ballerina.

But as of a May update, filming on the reboot is now expected to finally kick off this September.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill said, “Highlander!”

“That is taking all of my focus.”

“It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about,” he added.

“This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski.”

“He is a very talented man.”

Cavill is set to star in the Amazon Studios reboot as the sword-wielding immortal, taking over the role made famous by Christopher Lambert in the original.

Originally released in 1986, the Highlander franchise has seen multiple sequels, spin-off series, and an animated show, but none quite captured the cult appeal of the original film starring Lambert and Clancy Brown.

This new version looks set to change that. Alongside Cavill, Highlander is also expected to star Russell Crowe, reuniting the pair after they previously shared the screen in Man of Steel.

While not officially confirmed, Crowe is widely rumoured to be playing a version of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez - the immortal mentor played by Sean Connery in the original.

Fans had already been speculating about Cavill’s involvement after he debuted a long-haired look earlier this year, fuelling rumours about the reboot finally taking shape.

It’s not the first time the project has resurfaced.

At one point, Ryan Reynolds was attached to star in the reboot, but Stahelski’s version appears to be moving full steam ahead.

Explaining why Cavill was his top choice, Stahelski said, “My selling point to [Henry] was, look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation.”

“So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc… and you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”
