Henry Cavill to play martial arts master with over 500 years worth of training in Highlander reboot

“There's a big opportunity for action."

Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot is finally gaining momentum, as director Chad Stahelski has shared an exciting update on the film’s plot.

After months of delays, the project now has a tentative filming start date.

Speaking to The Direct, Stahelski shared what fans can expect from this fresh take on the action-fantasy franchise.

While celebrating the 10th anniversary of John Wick, Stahelski revealed plans to begin filming in spring 2025 and dropped some intriguing plot details.

Stahelski said, “We are bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes.”

“There’s a big opportunity for action.”

“There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play,” he added.

“It’s a bit of a love story, but not how you think. On ‘John Wick,’ I learned a lot on how to bend the storytelling a little… another kind of myth.”

Stahelski shared that what drew Henry Cavill to the project was the main character’s deep and intense story arc- portraying someone who has lived for over 500 years as a seasoned martial artist.

He went on, “My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation.”

“So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”

He also confirmed that they aim to start principal photography by spring 2025.

Henry Cavill and director Chad Stahelski have been linked to Highlander for years, though the project wasn’t officially greenlit until 2023.

Stahelski acknowledges the long road it’s taken to get the film moving, explaining that he’s committed to honoring the franchise’s deep mythology.

Since the original movie debuted in 1986, the Highlander series has expanded into multiple films, TV shows, and other media.

The original Highlander follows the story of Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th century who discovers he is immortal after surviving a fatal wound in battle.

Mentored by a fellow immortal, Ramirez (played by Sean Connery), Connor learns about his unique nature and the rules of their existence.

As centuries pass, Connor engages in duels with other immortals, battling his sworn enemy, The Kurgan, a brutal and dangerous immortal determined to claim The Prize.
