ByAbi Woosey

The 49-year-old actor recently recalled the “horrific” things critics said about her during the release of James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic.

Starring as Rose DeWitt Bukater, the five-time BAFTA winner opened up about being the target of harsh scrutiny during the promotional period of Titanic.

“It’s absolutely appalling.”

The star was only 22 years old when the film hit theatres, only 21 whilst filming the role that would shoot her into stardom.

However, Winslet has often shared how unpleasant being in the limelight was, especially for her health.

“What kind of a person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who’s just trying to figure it out?”

Winslet opened up about how the judgements affected her during an episode of CBS’s ’60 Minutes.’

In a clip from the 1998 Golden Globe Awards, Winslet was walking the red carpet with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

An interviewer told Winslet she looked “a little melted and poured” into her dress, as well are commented she should have worn one “two sizes larger.”

Winslet shared how she never publicly scolded the critics for shaming her, but she did respectfully humiliate some.

“I let them have it. I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’ It was a great moment. It was a great moment because it wasn’t just for me.”

“It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific, it was really bad.”

The Holiday actor recalled how the shaming started early in her career, from her acting teacher.

“‘Now, listen, Kate. I’m telling you, darling, if you’re going to look like this, you’ll have to settle for the fat girl parts.’”

However, Winslet stated that, after being in the industry for over 30 years, she’s learned to ignore the public’s opinion.
