Speaking to the BBC about her upcoming movie Lee, she told the interviewer that women should celebrate “being a real shape, being soft and maybe having a few extra rolls.”

This comes after Winslet was heavily criticised after being told she needed to sit up straight to hide her belly during her upcoming role.

Winslet said her job was to be like her character who was a fashion model turned acclaimed World War 2 photographer.

“She wasn’t lifting weights or doing Pilates.”

“She was eating cheese, bread and drinking wine, and not making a big deal of it,” Winslet said.

“So of course, her body would be soft,” she added.

“We’re so used to perhaps not necessarily seeing that and enjoying it.”

“The instinct weirdly is to see it and criticise it,” she said.

“It’s interesting how much people do like labels for women.”

She reiterated that this is a conversation that is needed.

“Life is too short, I don’t want to look back and go why did I worry about that thing’ and so guess what… I don’t worry anymore.”

The actress has spoken up previously on the body shaming women receive and revealed her own experience dealing with it.

In 2023 she spoke to Vogue and she was “shocked and horrified by how vilified I was by mainstream media,” during her role as Rose in Titanic.

She stated it was all due to “body-shaming” which is a “cruel but normalised reality of the 1990s and 2000s” and often found herself hiding from paparazzi.
