Kathy Bates announces retirement from acting and says Matlock reboot will be her ‘last dance’

ByVinay Sharma

Acclaimed actress Kathy Bates has revealed that her upcoming role in CBS’s Matlock reboot will likely be her final acting performance before retirement.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning star made the sad announcement, signalling the end of her illustrious career, which spanned over five decades.

The veteran actress expressed that the role in Matlock allows her to utilize all the skills she has honed throughout her career, describing it as both fulfilling and exhausting.

She said, “Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it. And it’s exhausting.”

She also added, “This is my last dance.”

Bates, 76,  opened up about the injustices in her career despite her incredible talent.

She explained, “Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain.”

“Do I have the right to feel this pain? When I was given so much?”

She also reflected on one of her biggest accomplishments - winning the Oscar for Best Actress for Misery - with a touch of regret.

“I never felt dressed right or well. I felt like a misfit. It’s that line in ‘Misery’ when Annie says, ‘I’m not a movie star.’ I’m not.”

Bates will star as Madeline “Matty” Matlock in the reimagined version of the classic legal drama.

The series features Bates as a brilliant septuagenarian lawyer who joins a prestigious law firm.

Bates’ decision to retire comes after a career filled with numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for her chilling performance in Misery (1990), two Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards.

Her versatility as an actress has been showcased in various memorable roles across film and television, from Titanic to American Horror Story.

Matlock set to premiere on CBS network on September 22, 2024
