Keegan-Michael Key says he doesn’t see Jordan Peele much anymore due to different ‘desires’

ByShashwat

Keegan-Michael Key recently shared in an interview that he and longtime comedic partner Jordan Peele don’t see each other as much anymore, a shift he referred to as a “tragedy.”

Despite once being inseparable and creating some of the most memorable sketch comedy with Key & Peele, the duo’s personal and professional lives have drifted apart over the years.

Key and Peele first met in 2004 while working on MADtv and quickly became close friends and collaborators.

Their success exploded with Key & Peele, the Comedy Central series that ran from 2012 to 2015 and earned critical acclaim, including two Emmy wins.

“Our evolution, I think, is tied to both of what our desires are,” Key said.

“His desire was to start exploring the horror genre, and my desire was to do more dramatic work like I had been trained in school.”

Since then, their careers have taken different paths.

Key has gravitated towards acting in films and series like Schmigadoon! and Transformers One, while Peele has become a celebrated director of horror films like Get Out and Nope.

The geographical distance between the two adds to the growing separation.

Key is based in New York with his wife, while Peele lives in Los Angeles with his family.

While both acknowledge that their evolving career interests have kept them apart, there’s no ill will between them- in fact, they continue to share a mutual respect for each other’s talents.

Reflecting on their time together, Key described their chemistry as “alchemy,” where their comedic synergy just clicked effortlessly on screen.

Despite their different paths, Key and Peele have managed to reunite for a few projects, most recently lending their voices to the 2022 stop-motion film Wendell & Wild.

However, such collaborations have become rarer as their busy schedules keep them occupied in separate corners of the entertainment industry.

As Key put it, both of them have “jumped to another platform” creatively, and while their comedy partnership may not be as frequent anymore, the impact of Key & Peele continues to be felt in comedy and pop culture.
