Legendary actor James Dean’s gay lover blackmailed him to keep their relationship secret

ByVinay Sharma

A new biography about James Dean, titled Jimmy: The Secret Life of James Dean by Jason Colavito, has uncovered a hidden chapter in the life of the iconic 1950s actor.

The book claims that Dean was blackmailed by his former lover, advertising executive Rogers Brackett, in 1954.

In excerpts published by Daily Mail, Colavito details the disastrous affair which left Dean feeling sexually exploited.

Brackett allegedly demanded $800 - about $9,000 in today’s money - to keep their relationship a secret, a revelation that could have derailed Dean’s career in the conservative Hollywood of the time.

Dean reportedly said at that time, “I didn’t know it was the whore who paid – I thought it was the other way around.”

Dean and Brackett’s relationship began in 1951 when Dean was a struggling young actor working as a parking valet.

Wealthy and older than Dean, Brackett was “struck by the golden beauty of the youth who took his keys,” according to Colavito.

When Dean told the exec that he was an actor, Brackett reportedly said he would keep the handsome youngster in mind for roles on the radio show.

He provided the aspiring star with financial support and valuable connections in the entertainment industry.

However, as Dean’s career began to take off, tensions arose.

Brackett, who had fallen on hard times, demanded repayment for his earlier support, even threatening legal action.

Dean, desperate to avoid scandal, reportedly agreed to pay the sum in instalments to settle the matter.

The book’s author, Jason Colavito, based his claims on newly uncovered court documents and personal correspondence that reveal the details of the settlement.

The biography, released on November 19, 2024, delves into this and other lesser-known details of James Dean’s personal life, shedding light on the intense pressures he faced during his rapid rise to fame.

James Dean, who died tragically at 24 in a car accident, became a timeless cultural icon for his roles in Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden.
