Quentin Tarantino says he won’t watch Timothée Chalamet’s Dune movies during remake rant

Quentin Tarantino has no desire to watch Dune films helmed by Denis Villeneuve.

During an interview on Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast, Tarantino shared his frustration with Hollywood’s trend of retelling the same stories over and over again.

Known for his distinct style and original screenplays, Tarantino reflected on past adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel Dune, particularly David Lynch’s version. 

He explained, “I saw [David Lynch’s] Dune a couple of times.”

“I don’t need to see that story again.”

“I don’t need to see spice worms.”

“I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘Spice’ so dramatically.” 

Beyond Dune, Tarantino also took aim at other recent adaptations like Netflix’s Ripley series and FX’s Shōgun, expressing frustration with the flood of remakes.

He said, “It’s one after another of this remake, and that remake. People ask ‘have you seen Dune? Have you seen Ripley? Have you seen Shogun?’ And I’m like no, no, no, no.”

He further added, “There’s six or seven Ripley books, if you do one again, why are you doing the same one that they’ve done twice already?”

“I have seen that story twice before, and I didn’t really like it in either version, so I’m not really interested in seeing it a third time.”

“If you did another story, that would be interesting enough to give it a shot anyway.”

Shōgun has earned critical acclaim and a strong fanbase, but that didn’t stop Tarantino from sharing his blunt opinion. 

He added, “I saw Shōgun in the ‘80s.

“I watched all 13 hours. I’m good. I don’t need to see that story again, I don’t care how they do it. I don’t care if they take me and put me in ancient Japan in a time machine.”

“I don’t care, I’ve seen the story.”

Fans have had mixed reactions to Quentin Tarantino’s comments about refusing to watch Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films.

On Reddit, some users didn’t hold back, with one saying Dune II is better than any of Tarantino’s films, while others called his dismissal “complete BS” and speculated he might have a personal grudge against it.

One user quipped, “I love Tarantino movies as well, but I find it funny and a bit rich for him to criticize the use of the word spice whilst his films are riddled with the use of a particular word.”

“Like, I know that’s not necessarily one-to-one, but c’mon be for real T.”

Another user added, “Ya know, I love Tarantino’s movies.”

“But his opinions are frequently just indefensible to me.”
