Simon Pegg calls Quentin Tarantino’s unmade Star Trek movie ‘batsh- crazy’

Simon Pegg has revealed fresh details about Quentin Tarantino’s unmade Star Trek film and says it was exactly as wild as you might expect.

Speaking at Fan Expo Boston over the weekend (via Collider), Pegg revealed that he once received a full breakdown of the concept from J.J. Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber.

The Shaun of the Dead star, who played Scotty in the rebooted Star Trek trilogy, didn’t hold back in describing it.

“That was what we call in the business batshit crazy,” he told the crowd.

“It was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek script to be.”

Pegg admitted he would have loved to see the sci-fi universe through the Pulp Fiction filmmaker’s unique style, but wasn’t sure how it would have landed with long-time Trekkies.

He went on to say, “I think it would have been such an incredible sort of curiosity to see Star Trek through his lens.”

“I don’t know how it would have gone over with the fans, but it certainly would have been an interesting thing.”

Tarantino pitched the idea back in December 2017, with an R-rated, ultra-violent take on Star Trek.

Paramount and Star Trek producer Abrams then brought him on board, with The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith writing the screenplay.

The project ultimately stalled, mainly because Tarantino was unsettled by the thought of it being his final film.

Smith earlier explained, “Quentin and I went back and forth… and then he started worrying about the number, his kind of unofficial number of films.”

“If I can just wrap my head around the idea that Star Trek could be my last movie… Is this how I want to end it?”

The script of the unmade Star Trek adventure still sits on Tarantino’s desk, according to Smith.

The story took inspiration from the 1968 Star Trek: The Original Series episode “A Piece of the Action”, where the Enterprise crew stumbles on a planet whose people model their entire society after 1920s Chicago mobsters.

Tarantino’s version would have expanded the premise into a full gangster-themed adventure.
