Sinners director admits his wife worried about Michael B Jordan hating using blood and gore

Sinners has been hitting headlines all week for its originality and is already hailed as one of the best films of the year.

Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler have worked together five times now, including Creed in 2015 and Black Panther in 2018.

A vampire horror-thriller film, Sinners has its fair share of blood and violence, much to Jordan’s dismay.

Coogler shared that the gallons of fake blood and scenes of gore were enough to require an emergency meeting for Jordan’s dislike of the props.

“I liked the fangs. Fangs were dope,” he told People.

“The blood was a bit messy and uncomfortable at times.”

“The blood was a lot.”

The film is set in 1930s Mississippi.

Jordan portrays twins Smoke and Stack, who have returned to their hometown for a fresh start.

Coogler shared: “I got called into a meeting a few weeks in by my producer and my wife Zinzi Coogler, and she was like, ‘Hey, we gotta talk about Mike.'”

“I’m like, ‘What? What’s going on?’ And she’s like, ‘The blood… he doesn’t like it.'”

“I’m like, ‘Wait, what?'”

Although Jordan claimed his dislike of the fake blood and gore wasn’t that serious, he appreciated the thought that went into making him comfortable.

“First of all, there’s a difference between complaining and venting.”

“I was just more venting, you know what I’m saying?”

“But they care about me, so they had a meeting.”

“I appreciate the meeting,” he said.

Both Coogler and Jordan admitted that some of the scenes were “disgusting.”

Jordan went on to share his experience with horror films and how he has never really been a fan.

“I wanted to do this, partially trying to help take the edge off a little bit. I was like, maybe if I know how it’s done and I’m in it, I might like [horror movies] a little bit more.”

Both Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku agreed that the gore was a lot to handle.

“You just have to get very comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

“It was very sticky.”

“That was something that we were not forewarned about.”

“The amount of times makeup had to run in with a spray bottle of water to unstick our fingers. Because we’d just be standing there and our fingers would get stuck together.”
