Terrifier 3 and Joker: Folie à Deux‘s battle at the box office has placed the horrific slasher Art the Clown at the number #1 spot, humiliating Joaquin Phoenix’s take at DC’s iconic villain for his second outing.
Joker: Folie á Deux cost around $200 million to produce, with it set to be a complete disaster at the box office, only earning $165.3 million in ticket sales.
Terrifier 3, on the other hand, cost around $2 million to produce with it already earning around $18.3 million, according to the latest estimates provided over the weekend box office.
In addition to Todd Phillips’ and Phoenix’s Joker sequel being dunked on by Cineverse’s latest Terrifier instalment, various other theatrical releases also fell victim to Art the Clown at the box office.
The Apprentice, starring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, couldn’t beat the third horror flick – as well as Pharrell Williams’ Lego-styled documentary Piece by Piece falling behind.
Saturday Night, an origin biopic based on the roots of the popular live comedy show Saturday Night Live aka SNL was also trumped at the box office by the sinister clown.
2019’s Joker may have grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office upon its release, however, its sequel’s performance has continued to worsen in its second weekend.
In response to the news, Terrifier‘s director Damien Leone expressed his pride in its success.
“Feeling proud and grateful,” Leone wrote in response to a post.
“I got to see Terrifier 3 in a packed theatre in Times Square last night and I seriously never experienced anything like it,” he added.
“The energy of the crowd was truly something to behold.”
The director also took to Instagram to express his thoughts on his third Terrifier movie performing well with both fans and box office results, “Can’t believe I’m about to announce that Terrifier 3 is now officially the #1 movie in the country.”
“Truly a monumental achievement for us, especially considering we’re an indie, unrated film that was always deemed too niche or too violent for mainstream audiences.”
“Never underestimate horror fans! I’m so honored and proud to share this moment with my cast and crew who all worked harder than you can imagine on this film. You guys are all passionate and dedicated rockstars,” he continued.
“Mainly I gotta say how proud I am of my partner @pjfalcone for always believing in me and risking his neck for me… and being a damn fine actor. Love you man.”
