L.J. Smith, the author best known for The Vampire Diaries book series, has died at the age of 66.
According to her family, Smith passed away after battling a rare autoimmune disease. Smith had been suffering from granulomatosis with polyangiitis, a condition that severely impacted her health over the last decade.
In 2015, she was hospitalized for two months and placed on a ventilator, resulting in lasting damage to her kidneys, heart, liver, and gallbladder.

A tribute on the author’s website said, “Lisa was a kind and gentle soul, whose brilliance, creativity, resilience and empathy, illuminated the lives of her family, friends and fans alike.”
“She will be remembered for her imaginative spirit, her pioneering role in supernatural fiction, and her generosity, warmth and heart, both on and off the page.”
Born in 1958, Lisa Jane Smith published her first novel, The Night of the Solstice, in 1987, followed by its sequel, Heart of Valor, in 1990.
She gained widespread fame in 1991 with The Vampire Diaries, a series that followed high school student Elena Gilbert and her entanglement with vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore.
The original trilogy was a massive success, prompting Alloy Entertainment to request an extended series.

By 2009, The Vampire Diaries was adapted into the popular CW television show that ran from 2009 to 2017, starring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder.
Smith’s influence extended beyond literature.
The TV adaptation of The Vampire Diaries spawned multiple spin-offs, including The Originals and Legacies, expanding the franchise and introducing her work to new audiences.
Despite the success of the TV series, Smith’s relationship with the franchise was complicated.
She was reportedly dismissed from writing The Vampire Diaries books after a creative dispute with the publisher but remained a beloved figure among fans.
Smith’s family requested privacy during this time and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
