Christopher Nolan’s next film has been officially revealed as The Odyssey, which may come as an early Christmas surprise to fans.

As reported earlier, The legendary director had been working on a secret project, reportedly featuring a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, with a planned 2026 release.

Universal has now officially confirmed that Nolan is adapting Homer’s ancient epic, which tells the story of Odysseus’s 10-year journey home after the Trojan War.

According to the studio, the adaptation of Homer’s classic poem is set to be a mythic action epic that will utilize cutting-edge IMAX technology.

The studio said in a statement shared on X, “Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.”

“The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theatres everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Nolan’s choice to adapt The Odyssey follows the massive success of Oppenheimer, which earned both critical praise and box office success.

Production for The Odyssey is slated to start in early 2025, with Nolan directing and co-writing the script alongside his longtime collaborator and wife, Emma Thomas.

Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, is one of the oldest works of literature still enjoyed by readers today.

It tells the story of the Greek hero Odysseus and his challenging journey home after the Trojan War.

The poem has inspired several film adaptations over the years.

The first was a silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro in 1911, followed by the 1954 movie Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas.

The 2000 satirical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a loose adaptation of the epic, and the 2024 film The Return, featuring Ralph Fiennes, focuses on the poem’s final sections.

Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey movie is expected to hit theatres on July 17, 2026.
