X-Men star James McAvoy admits filming his first ever raunchy scene was ‘terrifying’ but ‘quite funny’

Scottish actor James McAvoy once revealed he found a scene from his younger days quite “terrifying” as he played Steve in the Channel 4 UK hit TV series Shameless.

His character became romantically involved with Fiona Gallagher (Anne-Marie Duff), which was significant in earlier seasons until he became involved in criminal activities.

During the first episode, McAvoy could be seen engaging in sexual activities on the floor with his co-star Anne-Marie, which was quite a daunting prospect for the Glaswegian star.

“It was nice to play a romantic lead in Shameless,” he told The Independent.

“I haven’t done that since theatre.”

“It was really good fun.”

“I’ve never done a sex scene before,” he explained.

“It was terrifying.”

“There were these little triangular pieces to cover our bits.”

“They have to be attached by wardrobe people, and they ask you whether you prefer a man or a woman to do it.”

“First you think a man, and then you think ‘do I actually want a man?'”

“But then if I choose a woman I hope she doesn’t think I’m trying to get off with her.”

“The politics are weird,” he added.

He continued: “In the end I was a bit shocked about how realistic it looks.”

“I’ve never had sex on the kitchen floor, and I’ve never had that violent and kind of clumsy sex.”

“It’s quite funny to see myself do that.”

Despite McAvoy’s previous acting roles before Shameless, it certainly helped his career move forward, and it was essentially his big break.

He went on to play Mr Tumnus, a faun, in Disney’s Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Another significant McAvoy role was Wesley in Wanted, in which he starred alongside Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman.

One of his most significant roles was playing the telepathic leader of the X-Men, Charles Xavier.

Although he admitted he was not familiar with the comics, he enjoyed the cartoons as a child.
