Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps might have hit a rough patch in its second weekend at the box office, but the studio isn’t stepping away from its bigger plans for the franchise.
The long-awaited MCU reboot, which officially brings Marvel’s First Family into the MCU, had a strong opening of $117.6 million but took a steep 66% dip in domestic earnings in the second weekend.
Despite the discouraging box office numbers, Marvel Studios is reportedly moving ahead with a Fantastic Four sequel.
According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, director Matt Shakman is expected to return for a follow-up film, though nothing has been officially confirmed.
During a recent Disney earnings call, CEO Bob Iger called The Fantastic Four a successful launch for what he described as an “important franchise” in the MCU.
Marvel sees the Fantastic Four reboot as the start of something bigger, not just a one-time project, even though the box office results have been underwhelming.
The studio appears confident that the characters - Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm - will gain more traction with audiences after their upcoming roles in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The studio’s plan seems to rely on introducing the team more deeply into the wider MCU before bringing them back for a second solo film.
As for what that sequel could look like, it’s far too early to say anything.
But Marvel is said to have long-term plans involving cosmic heavyweights like Galactus and Julia Garner’s version of the Silver Surfer in the MCU’s future.
