Prime Video’s Rings of Power Season 2 gets positive viewership update from Amazon

ByAlex Duthie

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 has received a positive viewership update from Amazon since premiering on August 29.

According to Amazon, the second high-budget Prime Video season based on Tolkien’s works pulled in around 40 million viewers with its first four episodes.

Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, revealed the stats on Tuesday, as per Deadline.

It’s said Salke revealed the viewership information in an “internal memo to staff”.

In addition to the 40 million who have tuned in so far for Rings of Power Season 2, not including its fifth episode, “tens of millions” have also watched the first season since August – as per the memo.

It’s speculated that the first season viewership spike was in preparation for the second season.

As per the memo: “We’ve seen an impressive amount of our Rings of Power customers coming from outside of the U.S.”

“Which is a testament to the show’s resonance with global audiences and the remarkable growth of Prime Video customers worldwide,” the memo continued.

Although Amazon hasn’t fully clarified how viewership data is measured, it’s assumed that Salke is referring to the specific number of accounts who tuned in to watch the series.

It’s unlikely that the specific number of viewers, as opposed to accounts, can be measured properly as Amazon won’t be able to determine how many household viewers will be watching during a session.

Despite Amazon celebrating the second season’s viewership stats, the series has seemingly failed to match the viewership of its first season premiere, according to Samba TV’s data.

Prime Video brought in around 25 million viewers in the first day alone of Rings of Power‘s first season premiere, suggesting that the show managed to pull in the 40 million stat faster than season two.

However, all shows lose viewership as each new season releases, and despite the comparison – the show has still managed to jump up to the No. 1 spot on Prime Video.

Season two is also expected to make it to the Nielsen streaming charts, however, the Nielsen data won’t be available until later this month as the chart reports with around a month delay.
