Samuel L. Jackson, a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury, recently revealed that when he first signed his nine-movie deal with Marvel Studios, he had doubts about whether he’d live long enough to fulfil it.
In an interview, Jackson humorously recalled his reaction when Marvel president Kevin Feige offered him the contract, which seemed daunting at the time.
“I was like, ‘How long I gotta stay alive to make nine movies?’” Jackson joked, as he never anticipated how quickly the MCU would pump out those films.
When Jackson took on the role of Nick Fury in Iron Man (2008), the MCU was still in its infancy, and no one could have predicted how massive the franchise would become.
However, the actor quickly found himself appearing in numerous films as the no-nonsense S.H.I.E.L.D. director, tying together various storylines across the growing cinematic universe.
Jackson has since appeared in more than a dozen MCU films, far exceeding his original contract.
Reflecting on his longevity in the MCU, Jackson expressed surprise at how fast the films were made. “I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years,” he quipped.
With Secret Invasion, The Marvels and other projects still featuring his iconic character, it’s clear that Jackson’s Marvel journey is far from over.
The actor’s continued presence as Nick Fury has not only cemented his legacy in the superhero genre but also shows how Marvel has leaned on him to connect many of its overarching narratives.
