Scarlett Johansson admits her fans get ‘offended’ when she turns down requests to take photos with them

Scarlett Johansson has shared that her decision to turn down fan photos outside of work events has caused tension in her everyday life.

The Avengers star recently revealed she refuses to take photos with fans outside of official events, such as premieres or talk show appearances—and admits it sometimes backfires.

Speaking to InStyle magazine, Johansson, who stars in the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, explained how this boundary has created friction.

She admitted, “It really offends a lot of people.”

“It doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative, of course, that people are fans or happy to see me. But I always say to people, ‘I’m not working.’”

“I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you.”

“I’m doing my own thing.”

Johansson explained she values her privacy and space.

She added, “I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me. I don’t like being self-conscious.”

She also mentioned feeling a connection to rising pop star Chappell Roan, who spoke out about setting similar boundaries with fans.

“Like everybody else, I fell in love with her over the summer. She’s very outspoken about how hard it’s been to adjust to fame.”

Johansson went on to compare her experience with that of famous men she dated early in her career.

She said, “It’s like heartthrobs. That’s hard. When I was younger, I dated actors that had heartthrob status. That is, to me, scary. I don’t have that level. Fan crush-dom can be really hard.”

The Marvel alum is also set to make her directorial debut this year with Eleanor The Great, a drama inspired by indie classics.

In the same interview, she added, “It’s like a little gem. I was inspired by those independent films from the mid-80s to the mid-2000s. Living Out Loud. Crossing Delancey. Moonstruck.”

Johansson described the experience as a creative challenge.

She shared, “It’s so exciting to be 40 and learn a new thing,” she shared.

“Now I know how to make a movie like this.”

“The process of sound mixing and colouring and editing—I didn’t know that before. And now I know how to do it.”
